Step Three: Jaw(line)

The jawline, the line that separates the head from the
rest of the image is the most important line on
the image. If it is weak the image is weak. If
it is wrong and out of balance the image will be weird
and out of balance. If it is too strong the image will
appear too harsh. A good part of the character's
personality is invested in this line so take great care
to get it right.

1. Original
jawline with a projection of the rest of the
head, invisible on the original image, in blue. |
 |

2. Original head
with neck and head construction lines. The head
has little cranial capacity (perhaps correct for
Mylene...) and the face is very large. Dropping
the eyes down a bit could help but the shape of
the jaw is still too round. |

3. New jawline
with new head shape projection in blue. (Old head
is in red.) I've trimmed a lot of the fat
off of her face and made her chin pointier, very
common for anime characters. |

4. New head with
new neck position. Original neck was offset too
much to the rear. (Keep in mind where the head
attached to the rest of the body - there's a
spine there!) The original neck was also too
thick. Most anime girls have very thin
necks and they tend to be rather long as
well. |

5.
New head with new face construction lines. Eye
level has been lowered and mouth level has been
moved up a little. (Compare with 2.) |
